New York’s Central Park Hits 99F, Setting New Daily Record

(Bloomberg) — New York’s Central Park reached 99F (37C) Tuesday afternoon, with blistering heat searing down as voters headed to the polls for the city’s mayoral primary race. The high temperatures are straining power grids and leading to calls for energy conservation.

The milestone sets a new record high for the date. It falls just short of 101F, the warmest June temperatures ever recorded at the park, which occurred on June 27, 1966 and June 29, 1934, according to National Weather Service data. Weather observations for the location date back to 1868.

The eastern half of the US has been wilting under high temperatures this week, and heat advisories and excessive heat warnings stretch unbroken from eastern Texas to northern Maine. The heat wave prompted the Trump administration to declare a power emergency in the US Southeast, allowing the local utility to exceed certain air pollution limits and take other steps to boost power generation. Grids are under strain as people crank up their air conditioners.

On Tuesday, spot power prices in New York City soared to $2,458.12 a megawatt-hour at 5:05 p.m. local time, while Long Island prices topped $2,800, according to data from the New York Independent System Operator. That’s 600% more than the cost of power secured in the day-ahead market for the same hour for both places.

Heat warnings are also posted across parts of Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Some parts of New York City experienced blackouts on Monday, and local utility Consolidated Edison Inc. has been issuing warning for customers to conserve energy since Sunday. PSEG Long Island on Tuesday also urged residents to cut back nonessential energy use.

New York’s state grid operator has issued an energy watch of potentially low power reserves for later Tuesday. The watch, issued when reserves are expected to fall below 2.6 gigawatts for more than an hour, also makes appeals to residents and businesses to conserve electricity.

In addition to straining the grid, the heat has slowed Amtrak trains from Boston to Virginia, according to the federally-funded passenger railroad’s website. Rails and overhead wires can kink and droop under high temperatures.
