This week’s new movies on VOD feature some strange and rare perspectives. In the Filipino release Magellan, Gael Garcia Bernal stars as the famed explorer, but the film provides the perspectives of those he colonized, and in the meta film By Design, Juliette Lewis plays a woman who becomes a chair and realizes she might be better off as an inanimate object.
Also out this week is Scarlet, the Japanese animated feature based on Shakespeare’s Hamlet with a few liberties taken to account for some time travel. The film was directed by Mamoru Hosoda, whose previous work includes Digimon: The Movie, One Piece and Mirai and it’s the story of a vengeful princess, Scarlet, who travels through time and space to avenge the death of her father after he’s murdered.

Magellan
Gael Garcia Bernal stars as the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in the historical drama Magellan, a film about his travels and conquests in Southeast Asia. Directed by Filipino Lav Diaz, who is known for his slow cinema style, the film reveals the often devastating effects of the explorers conquests in the East.
By Design
By Design stars Juliette Lewis as a woman who swaps bodies with… a chair. The surrealist dramedy directed by Amanda Kramer centers on Camille (Lewis), a woman who wishes she could be as well-loved as a perfectly designed chair she sees in a showroom. When she wishes she could swap forms with the chair, her wish comes true and, as the trailer explains, “everyone likes her much better as a chair.” Samantha Mathis, Robin Tunney and Betty Buckley co-star, and Melanie Griffith narrates the film which is available on VOD now.
