Rob Reiner, Wife Michele Singer Reiner Dead: Elijah Wood, Kathy Bates & More React

Zooey Deschanel is feeling Rob Reiner’s loss on a personal level.

One day after he and his wife Michele Singer Reiner were found dead in their Los Angeles home on Dec. 14, the New Girl alum reflected on her bond with the late Hollywood icon, who played her dad on the Fox sitcom. And she didn’t hold back in detailing how “absolutely devastated” she was by the news.

“My heart is broken,” Zooey, 45, wrote in a post on Instagram Dec. 15. “Rob Reiner was the absolute warmest, funniest, most generous of spirits. A truly good human being. An incredible artist and such a playful and fun collaborator. I cherish the time we spent working together and the many films he made that have shaped who I am.”

Alongside a photo carousel featuring images of the two on the set of the series, the actress also paid tribute to Michele, whom Rob wed in 1989 before welcoming kids Jake Reiner, 34, Nick Reiner, 32, and Romy Reiner, 28. (He was also dad to Tracy Reiner, 61, from his marriage to Penny Marshall.)

“Rob and his lovely wife Michele were always so kind and it brought me so much joy any time I was lucky enough to see them,” she continued. “Sending so much love to their family and friends.”

Also pictured in Zooey’s post was Jamie Lee Curtis, who recurred as her mom—and Rob’s ex-wife—throughout New Girl’s run. The Oscar winner and her husband Christopher Guest issued a statement of their own in light of the tragedy, remembering the Spinal Tap director —a frequent collaborator of Christopher’s—as a beloved member of their inner circle.

“Christopher and I are numb and sad and shocked about the violent, tragic deaths of our dear friends Rob and Michelle Singer Reiner,” the couple said in a statement to Variety, “and our ONLY focus and care right now is for their children and immediate families and we will offer all support possible to help them.”

“We have lost great friends,” the statement continued. “Please give us time to grieve.”

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed in a Dec. 15 press release that Rob and Michele’s son Nick had been arrested and booked for murder in connection with the case. He remains in police custody with no bail.
