The Dallas Cowboys' defense hit rock bottom in 2025. They finished the season with an underwhelming 7-9-1 record and missed the playoffs for the second straight year, largely because the defense allowed a catastrophic, franchise-record 511 total points.
That collapse cost Matt Eberflus his job after one season and forced Jerry Jones to hire 34-year-old Christian Parker from Vic Fangio’s Philadelphia Eagles staff, making him the youngest defensive coordinator in Dallas history.
Parker's arrival changes the scheme, the coaching, and the vibe in the building. But it doesn't erase the biggest question mark left over from last year's draft class: cornerback Shavon Revel Jr.
Dallas drafted East Carolina Pirates’ cornerback Shavon Revel Jr. with the 76th overall pick in 2025, betting that his elite potential justifies the selection despite a torn ACL that delayed his debut until Week 11.
The front office trusts Parker's track record. Instead of signing an expensive starter, Dallas brought in depth pieces like Cobie Durant and safety Jalen Thompson to handle things smoothly because they expect coach Parker, known for developing top defensive backs like Patrick Surtain II and Quinyon Mitchell, to maximize Revel’s potential.
This is the biggest question mark on the defense. If Parker's coaching unlocks the talent that made Revel a top prospect at East Carolina, Dallas gets a long-term starter opposite DaRon Bland. If Revel struggles to stay healthy or look comfortable in coverage, it becomes another failed draft gamble.
History shows the Cowboys have been down this road before. Over the last few seasons, the front office has struggled to hit on cornerback talent in the draft. Dallas spent a 2021 second-round pick on Kelvin Joseph, who was quickly benched and traded away.
That same year, they used a third-round pick on Nahshon Wright, who barely cracked the defensive rotation. Going back further, 2020 fourth-round pick Reggie Robinson II never played a single defensive snap for the team.
Parker is keeping expectations realistic. He told reporters this offseason that confidence "comes from demonstrated ability." That applies to both his young cornerback and himself. Either way, this secondary battle will define a defense trying to bounce back from an underwhelming year.
