Catan is getting the Netflix treatment.

The world-famous tabletop game, formerly known as Settlers of Catan, is now the latest game that Netflix will be adapting into several projects after the streamer signed a “wide-range deal” for the exclusive global rights.

The company behind Catan, asmodee, announced as much in a celebratory press release.

“The upcoming projects will be the first adaptation to bring the fictional island of CATAN — a place where settlers must navigate bountiful and varied landscapes, shifting alliances, and limited resources, while robbers roam the land — to life through a richly imagined narrative,” the release states.

Details regarding the projects in development are still being kept under wraps, however, Jinny Howe, Netflix’s head of scripted series in US and Canada, notes there are “endless opportunities” available in this partnership.

“Anyone who has played CATAN knows that the intense strategy at the core of the game has endless opportunities for some serious drama,” Howe said. “We’re thrilled to partner across series, features, animation, and games to bring this world to life for hardcore Settlers and new fans alike.”

The press release explicitly notes the board game will be adapted into “ambitious” live-action and animated projects, both scripted and unscripted.

Catan was released in 1995 as The Settlers of Catan by the late creator Klaus Teuber. The game challenges players to

Teuber’s sons, Guido Teuber and Benjamin Teuber, will produce all projects under the deal, along with asmodee’s Darren Kyman and Pete Fenlon of CATAN Studio.

This news comes after Netflix recently adapted asmodee’s French card game The Werewolves of Millers Hollow into a French film titled Family Pack (or Loups-garous).

Catan is now the latest game to be adapted into a Netflix series, after projects such as Arcane and Castlevania.

The streamer is also developing a Assassin’s Creed series and a Monopoly reality competition.
