Nelly Furtado is quitting performing “for the foreseeable future.”
The “Promiscuous” singer, 46, announced her decision in an Instagram post on Friday while celebrating the 25th anniversary of the release of her debut album, “Whoa Nelly!”
“25 years ago today my first album Whoa, Nelly! was released,” Furtado wrote, sharing a photo of herself in 2000 and a more recent video of her performing in Berlin, Germany.
“25 years later, my music has reached a whole new generation of fans and I couldn’t be happier about that,” she added. “To have so many people rediscovering my music has been surreal and joyful. It’s been so fun embracing this opportunity, getting out on stages again and seeing up close, the true lasting power of good music. It’s made me really believe in magic.”
Furtado went on, “All this aside, I have decided to step away from performance for the foreseeable future and pursue some other creative and personal endeavors that I feel would better suit this next phase of my life.”
“I have enjoyed my career immensely,” the Grammy winner said, “and I still love writing music as I have always seen it as a hobby I was lucky enough to make into a career. I’ll identify as a songwriter forever.”
The “Maneater” singer said that she’s “grateful for all the years of fun, community and wonder” and thanked “anyone who has ever listened and vibrated with my music and attended any of my shows.”
“I deeply thank all of those who have worked so hard to help me make my pop dreams come true on a creative and organizational level,” she added. “I thank all my brilliant collaborators and loyal champions . I also wish , to the new generation of artists, many years of fruitful and passionate performance.”
“Thank you and goodnight!” Furtado concluded her post.
Furtado released her latest album, “7,” in Sept. 2024. It was Furtado’s first album in seven years and was recorded with her daughter, Nevis Gahunia, 22.
“I said, ‘Hey, Neve, do you want to come with me to the studio?’ She sat right next to me, and it was like magic,” Furtado told People last year.
“Between a parent and a child, you do need that other thing that connects you,” she added. “And how interesting that it was music, right under our nose the whole time, but we didn’t really discover that until that first day.”
