NCAA denies Connor Stalions' appeal for Michigan sign-stealing scandal

Former Connor Stalions lost his NCAA appeal Thursday, as the Division I Infractions Appeals Committee upheld an eight-year show-cause penalty tied to Michigan’s 2023 sign-stealing scandal.

According to Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, the committee affirmed all findings from a two-year investigation into impermissible scouting activities that occurred between the 2021 and 2023 seasons.

Stalions, a former defensive analyst for the Michigan Wolverines, was accused of directing a scheme in which he purchased tickets to future opponents’ games and arranged for signs to be recorded from the sidelines.

In his appeal, Stalions argued there were procedural errors in how the investigation began and claimed the NCAA misapplied its scouting bylaw. The appeals committee determined he did not sufficiently outline arguments addressing aggravating factors and denied the appeal.

The penalty restricts Stalions from working in any role related to athletes at an NCAA school through 2033, unless an institution successfully petitions for his hire. Any such hire would also trigger a mandatory one-year suspension.

The Committee on Infractions also issued penalties to former Michigan and current Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh and other staff members as part of the sweeping case.
