Hayes King put up 511 yards of total offense with four total touchdowns, but it wasn't enough as No. 8 Georgia Tech suffered their first loss of the season 48-36 to NC State on Saturday night. The Yellow Jackets came into the game as one of college football's last unbeaten teams.
The Wolfpack (5-4, 2-3 ACC) was riding a two-game losing streak and needed a spark in ACC play. They worked with a more balanced approach at home. Duke Scott ran for a career-best 196 yards in place of injured ACC rushing leader Hollywood Smothers to help NC State roll. Scott broke loose around the left side for a 30-yard touchdown with 4:07 left to effectively seal the win.
CJ Bailey threw for 340 yards and two touchdowns while running for another. He helped deliver the Wolfpack first win over a top-10 opponent in more than four years. NC State fans flooded the field at Carter-Finley Stadium after the final whistle to celebrate the upset.
The Yellow Jackets (8-1, 5-1 ACC) entered with its first 8-0 start since 1966 and shared the ACC lead with No. 15 Virginia. In an odd twist, N.C. State has handed both teams their only losses this season. A stat that will likely help Dave Doeren save his job at the end of the season.
