During the earliest events of the 2026 Winter Olympics, viewers of the NBC family of channels may notice small drones whirring around.
Those drones are cameras, and they're getting remarkable shots while being incredibly close to the competition.
Really, it's astounding to watch.
On Saturday, fans couldn't keep their eyes off the drones during skiing, snowboarding and luge events.
I need @NBCOlympics to do a piece on the drone operators following these downhill skiers because HOW ARE THEY DOING THIS
— Kassie Epstein (@kassieepstein) February 7, 2026Really digging the use of drones in the Olympics so far. I've always said you don't understand how fast and steep skiing and boarding events are until you see them in person. The trailing drone really shows that.

It was quite remarkable to watch during the men's Big Air snowboard final. The drone seemed like it was almost right next to the competitor going down the slope, yet it never caused a problem in the competition.
There were a few complaints about the sound, though.
I think the sound of the Winter Olympics outdoor events is drones rushing around, I don't like the sound intruding on events (no issue with using drones but there must be a way to remove the noise).

That's a small price to pay for the incredible camera shots that NBC is providing the audience, and they will likely improve upon the drone usage as the Games go along.
It's already off to a great start.
