Los Angeles Lakers power forward LeBron James knows what it's like to win NBA titles—and lots of them. He is considered one of the greatest players in league history, but he also has a soft spot for the Ohio State Buckeyes college football team.
Although James didn't formally go to a four-year institution, the Akron, Ohio, native was nearly recruited by then-Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel, who raved about James' athletic ability as a multi-sport athlete in high school. James attended St. Vincent-St. Mary High School from 1999-2003, winning three basketball titles in four seasons.
But it was his football ability Tressel was fascinated by, particularly at the wide receiver position.
“He was a good wide receiver,” Tressel said on the "It’s All About the Team" podcast. "He was a beast. All you had to do was throw it up there, and he could fly. And he was tough. He had everything.”
Two decades later, James took part in a hype video narration featuring those same Buckeyes as they attempt to win a national championship to cap off the College Football Playoff and the season at-large against Notre Dame Monday night.
The video, titled "Chapter of Champions," gives Buckeye fans a glimpse into how far the team has come since its last championship, alongside historical anecdotes.
"It is what it will always be – "Ohio Against the World," James said. "Our story is unfinished. Our story has one last chapter to write. The chapter of champions."
Ohio State-Notre Dame kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN from Atlanta, Ga. The Buckeyes defeated Tennessee, Oregon, and Texas to get to the title game, whereas Notre Dame knocked off Indiana, Georgia, and Penn State during its postseason journey.
Regardless of the outcome, James, like millions of others, will watch this game intently, seeking a conclusion to one of the most memorable seasons in recent memory and a reminder that sports bring people together. Even events with no rooting interest or a semi-rooting interest are rare exceptions for James, who is in the middle of his 22nd NBA season.
For now, it remains whether the Buckeyes can finish their story. But only time will tell.
