Rejoice, NBA fans. Hardwood hoops are back in action on Tuesday night, with three marquee matchups kicking things off across the country for the 2026-27 season.

At 3 p.m. ET, Cade Cunningham and the Detroit Pistons will host Jayson Tatum's Boston Celtics. Detroit is coming off of their first 60-win season since the 2005-06 campaign, and Boston lost Jaylen Brown during the offseason.

Speaking of Brown, the Philadelphia 76ers are heading to the Big Apple to take on the defending champion New York Knicks on their championship ring night. MSG will be raucous, both for cheering on the champs and LeBron James, and it should provide a must-see game.

Finally, a battle of MVP frontrunners with Victor Wembanyama and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will commence when the San Antonio Spurs host the Oklahoma City Thunder at 9:30 p.m. ET. Wemby and Co. beat the Thunder in a cinematic 7-game series last summer, but SGA and his crew will be seething for revenge on the road.

With the NBA season set to kick off in the coming days, now is the perfect time to get started with prediction markets, especially on ProphetX. Plus, new users can sign up with promo code TSN to earn a $75 prediction bonus on ProphetX. The Sporting News provides the best prediction market apps to use for the 2026-27 NBA season, including the best markets, picks, offers and more.

ProphetX NBA value picks for Oct. 20

Tatum officially has the keys to this Celtics offense for the foreseeable future. He always was the first option, but with Jaylen Brown out of the picture, there isn't another marquee scorer that is capable of taking on the brunt of his workload. During last year's playoffs, Tatum only hit this line once through a 30-point effort in Game 4. Outside of Payton Pritchard and Derrick White, no one on the Celtics is capable of dropping more than 20 points on any given night. Paul George is 36 years old, and even though he did find his way to 39 points in a game last season, Father Time is ticking. Tatum looks in for a monster season in Bean Town, and that starts with a strong opening night performance against Detroit.

It's Banner Night at Madison Square Garden. Most Knicks fans never thought they'd see the day. Philadelphia has pushed all their chips into the center of the table with how much talent they brought in this offseason, but it's going to take some time for all their stars to acclimate to each other. Jaylen Brown is likely going to be the first option, with Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid, and LeBron James all trying to put some points on the board as well. The Knicks, outside of Mitchell Robinson's departure to the Celtics, didn't lose or gain much this offseason. They'll be playing the same style of basketball that won them an NBA Championship; not much to complain about there.

Kalshi NBA opening night markets

Of course, Kalshi offers its own batch of markets for NBA Opening Night as well. They're outlined here:

  • Half/quarter props (moneyline, spread, total)
  • Overtime
  • Player props (points, rebounds, assists, threes, blocks, steals)
  • Player combo props (points + rebounds + assists, steals + blocks)
  • Race to 10 points
  • Winning margin

OG.com NBA value picks for Oct. 20

Even though the Sixers have a big spotlight on them, call it the "LeBron Effect," Brown should be in for a big year in the City of Brotherly Love. In every game against the Knicks last season, the former Celtic dropped at least 23 points, including a 42-point effort. He should be his new team's first option even with the plethora of talent there, and he even cruised to an efficient 22 points against New York in the preseason. He averages 20.4 PPG in 34 games against the Knicks according to StatMuse, and he'll show that he can go over that regardless of the team name across his chest.

Wembanyama is a freak of nature. He is one of the best players in the league, but the OKC Thunder showed they know how to limit the 7-foot-4 Frenchman's rebounding. Outside of the first two games of the series, Wembanyama wasn't able to garner over 10 rebounds for the remaining five games. He was able to find slightly more success against New York in the Finals, but OKC is a much better defensive team. Isaiah Hartenstein and Chet Holmgren will do everything in their power to seek revenge after being bested by Wemby last May.
