NBA legend shares secrets to stopping Victor Wembanyama

1 hour ago 2

Victor Wembanyama is no longer just "potential." The San Antonio Spurs phenom has emerged as a true MVP candidate in his third NBA season, with the white-hot Spurs having won 25 of their past 27 games to consolidate their position as a championship contender.

Wembanyama produced another ridiculous stat line in a 129-114 home win over the Chicago Bulls on Monday. As San Antonio improved to 57-18, Wembanyama scored 41 points on 17-of-27 shooting, hauled in 16 rebounds, dished out four assists and blocked three shots, helping the Spurs keep pace with the Oklahoma City Thunder atop the Western Conference.

Opponent after opponent is finding it impossible to deal with Wembanyama's generational combination of size and skill. One legendary big man though believes there might be a way for teams to slow him down in the postseason.

Robert Parish told FanDuel TV on Tuesday that Wembanyama "does the defense a favor" when he fans further out from the post to attempt a jump shot. Though he is a reasonably good shooter at 35.1 percent from 3-point land, Wembanyama -- in Parish's view -- helps out the Spurs' opponents when he doesn't post up.

"Push him farther out on the floor and (do) not let him catch (the ball)," Parish said. "I would deny him at all costs. Don't let him touch the basketball."

Parish, who until recently held the NBA record for regular season games played, conceded that it is "easier said than done" to deny Wembanyama touches, as the Spurs can run actions to get him the ball. And since he's 7'5'', Wembanyama towers over most players anyway, even those who are elite interior defenders.

It's going to present a matchup quandary for the Spurs' foes in the playoffs, and it will take some creativity to stop San Antonio from reaching the conference finals for the first time in nine years.
