Former NBA big man turned analyst Kevin Perkins had some strong words for the Cleveland Cavaliers, particularly targeting their frontcourt, after their 114-104 loss to the Houston Rockets on Wednesday.

Highlighting the Cavaliers’ struggles inside, where they were outrebounded 51-39, outscored in the paint 52-44 and gave up 21 second-chance points, Perkins described the team as “creamy in the middle” despite having All-Stars and known defenders -- a remark that drew laughs from fans.

“They dominated them on the glass,” Perkins said. “They dominated them in the paint. And there's zero excuses because you have Evan Mobley, who is the reigning Defensive Player of the Year. You have Jarrett Allen. You have two twin towers that are available. But the only reason that they're not getting it done is because they're soft. They're creamy in the middle.”

The remark caught fans’ attention and prompted reactions online.

“Don’t ever say ‘they’re creamy in the middle’ ever again. I agree they’re soft but damn that’s wild to say 😂😂,” one fan said. “How many out of pocket s**t is he going to say this year🤣🤣🤣 They need to fire his a** lalready,” another said. “They’re what in the middle???” another commented.

Some users found it entertaining that Perkins used a food analogy to describe the Cavaliers’ interior defense.

Of course someone of his size will use food in his analogy.

Are the Cavaliers’ interior defense a concern?

The Cleveland Cavaliers currently rank 10th in the league with a defensive rating of 112.3.

However, they allow the 10th most rebounds per game to opponents at 45.5, which was particularly problematic against the Rockets, who allow the fewest opponent rebounds in the league at 37.9.

The Cavaliers also allow the ninth fewest points in the paint at 48.4 per game and the eighth fewest second-chance points at 14.6 per game.

Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen continue to perform well individually. Mobley is averaging a career-high 18.8 points, although his rebounding is his second-lowest of his career at 8.6 per game.

Meanwhile, Allen is averaging 14.8 points per game, but his rebounding is also near a career low at 7.6 per game.

The two former All-Stars will need to protect the paint more effectively to address the Cavaliers’ interior struggles, helping to support Donovan Mitchell, who is averaging 30.2 points per game.
