Over the last three seasons, Foster Griffin played his professional ball in Japan. He pitched for the Yomiuri Giants, and he was coming off a 6-1 record with them in 2025.
He decided to take another shot at playing in the big leagues in the States and hit the free agent market over the winter. There were rumors he would land with the San Francisco Giants or the Toronto Blue Jays, but he signed a deal with the Washington Nationals.
The two sides agreed on a one-year, $5.5 million contract, and he has been one of the league's breakout arms, helping Washington reach an 11-13 start.

Nationals may want to consider trading breakout arm before he hits free agency
Griffin is operating as the team's ace to start the season. He has a 3-0 record on five starts with a team-leading 3.38 ERA on 26.2 innings of work.
Now, the Nats aren't viewed as contenders this season, so it may be worth picking up callers on potential Griffin trades. Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller believes the LHP will be a top trade candidate later this year.
"There's going to be a market for that guy if he stays healthy, just like there was a market for Erick Fedde after he pitched well in Korea in 2023 and upon his return with the Chicago White Sox in 2024."
Contenders are always looking for a starting pitcher at the deadline, and Griffin should field numerous calls if he can stay healthy until then.
This seems like a no-brainer if the Nationals fall out of contention. Might as well get something in return for somebody that likely won't be back for the 2027 season.
