Joey Wiemer isn't a guy who was necessarily expected to make history at the MLB level.
Right now, though, that's exactly what he's doing for the Washington Nationals.
Before this week, no player had ever homered in his first two games with the Nationals, dating to the franchise's move to Washington in 2005.
Now, that's exactly what Wiemer has done after leaving the yard again on Sunday at Wrigley Field.
Wiemer is a 27-year old outfielder from Sylvania, Ohio. He was a fourth-round pick by the Brewers in the 2020 MLB Draft.
He's 6-foot-4 and 226 pounds, certainly looking like a guy who should have MLB-level power.
In his career before this season, he had 16 home runs.
Already this season, Wiemer has left the yard twice.
With his home run in the first inning, Joey Wiemer became the first player to homer in each of his first two games as a National (2005-pres.).
His two home runs in his first two games matches Mark Reynolds in 2018 for the most by a National in his first two games with the team…

Most didn't even expect Wiemer to make the Nationals' Opening Day roster. But when the Nats sent down both Dylan Crews and Robert Hassell, it left room for Wiemer.
And given a couple early starts when a southpaw has been on the mound, Wiemer has made a case that the Nationals made the correct call.
If he keeps hitting like this, especially with the platoon advantage, Wiemer will maintain his MLB roster spot.
Regardless, it's a special start to the 2026 season for Wiemer with the Nationals.
