When Cleveland Browns edge rusher Myles Garrett won the Defensive Player of the Year award last season, Pittsburgh Steelers edge rusher T.J. Watt publicly expressed disappointment in the decision.
Watt did have a reason to be frustrated with getting snubbed. After all, he had tallied five more sacks and nearly double the pressures than Garrett. He also had superior numbers in other categories, like tackles, tackles for loss, passes defensed, interceptions and fumble recoveries.
After Garrett was announced as the winner, Watt took to social media to express his disappointment, saying, "Nothing I'm not used to," which created quite a stir. Watt then went on to clarify what he meant with the tweet.
"I think that’s up for everybody to kind of debate," Watt said when asked if he felt he could have done more to win the award. "It was just one of those things where people were seeing I wasn’t there. I wanted to let them know why I wasn’t there, and it was just a situation where it is something I’m truly used to at this point, so I’ll just use it as motivation going forward."
With the Browns set to host the Steelers on Thursday night, Garrett was asked about Watt's reaction and went on to criticize the Steelers star for it.
"I've never complained about the trophy not being in my house, and vice versa," Garrett said. "He shouldn't be feeling two ways about it going to me... It's up for grabs this year, and we'll see the best man win."
Watt is once again ahead of Garrett in several statistical categories this season, but the Steelers star isn't leading the league in sacks and isn't in the same position he was in 2023 to win the award, so it's possible neither player gets it.
