My daughter-in-law is furious I told her dog moms aren’t real moms — and I didn’t buy her a Mother’s Day gift

A woman has a bone to pick after her mother-in-law told her she wasn’t a mother. 

Jenny says her two fur babies do in fact make her a mom worthy of celebrating, even on Mother’s Day. 

Taking to Reddit, with the username InitialSong2898, her mother-in-law (let’s call her Song), explained the situation.

She wanted to know if she’d crossed a line.  

“I always thought it was a joke. She is big on being a dog mom”

The 64-year-old grandmother writes that she has three kids who are all married. 

Her son and his wife are currently expecting and her daughter has a young son. 

“Jenny struggles with infertility and she has no children,” the grandmother explained.

While all her children were busy for Mother’s Day she decided to share the love by sending her son and daughter a gift basket. However, Jenny didn’t get one.

After her daughter and daughter-in-law sent their thanks in the group chat, Jenny was quick to get on the phone. 

“Jenny called me soon after and asked where her basket was. I was confused and asked what she meant,” Song wrote.

“She clarified I have two grandkids by her already and said her dogs names.” 

It’s not the first time Jenny has blurred the human/dog baby line. 

“Jenny always made comments that her two dogs are the first grandkids. I always thought it was a joke. She is big on being a dog mom,” Song revealed.  

“Mother’s Day is for women that raise human children”

Jenny believes she should have received equal recognition on Mother’s Day. 

“I was even more confused at this and she clarified that she is her dog’s mother and should have gotten a basket.,” Song explained. 

“I told her she is not a mother, Mother’s Day is for women that raise human children and not pet owners. She got really upset and cursed me out for not getting her a basket and that she is a parent.” 

Commenters chimed in on Jenny’s stance.

“I understand that her infertility might be hard for her and she loves her dogs, but at the end of the day it really doesn’t make her a mother,” one person commented. 

“The a**hole is the one who posted it in the group chat,” a second person acknowledged. 

“As a 40 year old with no children (by choice!), and 3 cats I would never expect someone to acknowledge me on Mother’s Day. I kind of would be a little weirded out if they did,” a third wrote. 

Some criticised the grandmother.

“I mean technically the pregnant DIL hasn’t raised any children yet either yet she was included in receiving a gift,” one commenter pointed out. 

Another urged: “Please have grace. Maybe she’s going through particularly hard time dealing with not being able to have kids.”

The gift basket has caused a bit of a dog’s breakfast for family relations. 

“My son is telling me to apologise and to send a Mother’s Day basket over. He is calling me a jerk for not sending her a basket and telling her she is a pet owner,” Song explained.
