Claressa Shields has been very vocal about wanting to fight Laila Ali in the last few weeks. Now, Ali's late father, boxing legend Muhammad Ali's ex-wife, is giving her take on the potential match-up. Laila is the daughter of the boxing icon with his third wife, Veronica Porché.
"I think Laila needs to stay in the kitchen," Khalilah Camacho-Ali told Seconds Out after Shields' fight in Detroit over the weekend. Shields won by unanimous decision in her fight against Lani Daniels on Saturday (July 26).
“You the champ. You the champ,’’ Camacho-Ali said to Shields.
Shields responded, “Thank you. I am trying to whoop Laila Ali’s a**."
Shields has been trying to convince Laila to step into the ring again and previously revealed that her team has put away $15 million to get the former boxer to agree to a match. Laila retired from boxing in 2007, with a record of 24-0 and 21 knockouts. Shields' record is 17 wins, 0 losses, and 3 wins by knockouts.
Camacho-Ali told USA TODAY that Laila is just "not as good" as Shields.
"Yeah, she’s a good cook," Camacho-Ali said. "I mean, she got all kind of spices in her name."
She clarified her answer: "As a fighter, she’s not as good as Claressa," Camacho-Ali said. "She doesn’t have that bulldog attitude."
Camacho-Ali said that it wouldn't be worth it for Laila to accept the offer and continuously shaded her boxing ability.
"I think she’s a great young woman with a beautiful family," Camacho-Ali said. "I think she needs to leave (boxing) alone. She’s too old for that and she’s not that good."
While Laila previously said she would need about $15 to $20 million to consider fighting Shields, she hasn't responded to the offer at this time.
