MLB writer suggests Red Sox could cut ties with Alex Bregman on one condition

The Boston Red Sox went into the All-Star Break on a 10-game win streak. They are set up to be buyers at the trade deadline, but one thing could change their plans.

If the season ended today, the Red Sox would be in the postseason. Alex Bregman has been mentioned in some trade rumors, but right now it looks like the All-Star third baseman is going to be a huge part of the team's postseason push. However, Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer suggested he could be traded on one condition: A losing streak coming out of the break.

"For one, the 31-year-old is back off the injured list after missing roughly six weeks with a quad strain," wrote Rymer. "For two, the Red Sox are red-hot after going into the break with a 10-game win streak. If the season was over, they would be in the playoffs. Granted, a post-break cold streak could wipe out Boston's momentum and force chief baseball officer Craig Breslow to reconsider his plans. If so, trading Bregman would only make more sense if the Red Sox can't circumvent his upcoming opt-out by extending him."

Barring a terrible stretch coming out of the All-Star Break, the Red Sox are going to need Bregman to play a huge role down the line. After trading Rafael Devers, he is the best hitter on the team.

Not only is Bregman going to play a role the rest of the way, but the Red Sox could be interested in keeping him around. They saved over $250 million by trading Devers, and can afford him.

Bregman and his agent, Scott Boras, have noted their willingness to sign an extension. However, if the Red Sox go into negotiations and realize a deal is not possible, a losing streak could make them inclined to trade him.
