MLB teams 'convinced' Marlins will finally make Sandy Alcantara trade decision

While the Miami Marlins aren't in last place in the NL East, and they're only two games out of a Wild Card spot, this is a team that's more likely to sell at the trade deadline than not.

It's a seller's market, and this Marlins team isn't close to being complete enough to go on a World Series, let alone a postseason run this year. So, with the Marlins more likely than not to be sellers, there is one player the attention will shift towards.

According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, Sandy Alcantara might finally be traded this year, as MLB teams are seemingly convinced the 2026 season is finally the year Miami trades the 2022 Cy Young away after years of speculation.

Marlins might finally trade Sandy Alcantara, with MLB teams convinced

"Teams are convinced that this is the year that the Marlins will trade ace Sandy Alcantara, who is under club control for one more season with a $21 million club option," Nightengale writes.

This is a very interesting situation for the Marlins, as ever since Alcantara's return, they've not traded their ace like the rumors indicated.

Last season, Alcantara was one of the hottest trade deadline names, but they held onto him, which was the right decision after his strong second-half of 2025 and solid start to 2026.

Now, with a 4.25 ERA and one more year of club control left on his deal, it might be time for the Marlins to trade their ace, get as much back as possible thanks to the year of control and promise of better days ahead, rather than hold onto him for another season.

If there were ever a time to trade Alcantara, it would be now for the Marlins. There are plenty of teams that would offer some strong packages for the ace, even though he's not been as good as normal this season.

A team like the Chicago White Sox, San Diego Padres, or Chicago Cubs would surely have interest in Alcantara this summer.

While Tarik Skubal might take center stage at the MLB trade deadline, Alcantara is someone who teams are likely to be vying for this summer.

Nightengale is reporting that MLB clubs are convinced Miami will finally trade Alcantara this summer, which would open the door for a potentially franchise-changing return for the Marlins by the August 3 trade deadline later this year.
