MLB playoff picture: Updated standings, tightest races and games to watch Sept. 17

The 2026 MLB playoff race has reached the point where one bad night can completely change October. Four teams have officially clinched postseason spots entering Thursday, Sept. 17: the Tampa Bay Rays, Milwaukee Brewers, Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees. Milwaukee has already secured the NL Central title.

Almost everything else remains unsettled.

The American League Central is separated by half a game. The AL West is tied. The final AL wild-card position is separated by one game, while the National League's final wild-card race still has life. With the Wild Card Series beginning Sept. 29, scoreboard watching has officially become part of every night. 

Here is where the most important races stand entering Thursday.

AL Central and AL West could go down to the wire

Cleveland owns only a half-game advantage over the Chicago White Sox in the AL Central. That is not even the closest division race. Houston and Texas enter Thursday tied atop the AL West. 

The two races also intersect with the wild-card picture, which means a team can move from division champion to fighting for its postseason life very quickly. The White Sox currently occupy the final AL wild-card position, only one game ahead of Texas. Toronto is also lurking 1.5 games behind Chicago for that final berth. 

That makes Thursday particularly important.

Kansas City visits Houston at 7:15 p.m. ET. Detroit plays the White Sox at 7:40 p.m. ET. Boston visits Texas at 8:05 p.m. ET. 

Those three games alone can reshape multiple parts of the American League bracket before Friday morning.

Boston has more breathing room than Chicago or Texas, but the Red Sox have not secured anything yet.

The Yankees hold the first AL wild-card position and sit six games ahead of Boston. The Red Sox occupy the second wild card and have a five-game advantage over the White Sox.

The tiebreakers make the situation even more interesting.

Boston owns the tiebreaker over Chicago but loses it to New York and Houston. Its season-series tiebreakers against Tampa Bay, Cleveland and Texas remain undecided entering Thursday. 

That makes Boston's game against Texas more meaningful than one September matchup normally would be.

Dodgers are one result from another NL West title

The Dodgers have already secured their 14th consecutive postseason appearance, tying the Braves' 1991-2005 run for the longest streak in MLB history.  Now Los Angeles is on the verge of adding another division championship.

The Dodgers enter Thursday at 92-60, nine games ahead of the 83-69 Padres in the NL West. Their magic number to win the division is one, meaning a Los Angeles victory or San Diego loss will clinch the Dodgers' fifth consecutive NL West title. 

The more interesting question for Los Angeles may soon become postseason seeding.

Milwaukee currently occupies the NL's top position, while Los Angeles is chasing one of the two first-round byes. The top two division winners in each league advance directly to the Division Series rather than playing in the best-of-three Wild Card Series.

That makes every remaining Dodgers game relevant even after the division is settled.

The final NL wild-card position also remains unresolved. San Diego currently holds it with a 3.5-game advantage over Arizona. 

The Padres have made the race considerably more difficult for Arizona by winning nine of their last 10 entering Thursday, while the Diamondbacks sit at 80-73. Atlanta also leads Philadelphia by 4.5 games in the NL East, leaving another division race mathematically alive.

If the postseason began today, the American League field would consist of Tampa Bay, Cleveland and Houston as division leaders, with New York, Boston and the Chicago White Sox occupying the three wild-card positions. In the National League, Milwaukee, Los Angeles and Atlanta would be the division winners, while the Cubs, Phillies and Padres would take the wild cards. 

But the words "if the postseason began today" are doing considerable work.

Houston and Texas are tied. Cleveland's division lead is half a game. Chicago's wild-card cushion is one game. Toronto is 1.5 games out. Arizona remains 3.5 games behind San Diego.

There are very few meaningless games left for the contenders.

And because MLB eliminated Game 163 tiebreakers beginning with the expanded postseason format, head-to-head records and subsequent mathematical tiebreakers determine playoff positions when clubs finish with identical records. 

That means several games being played this week could effectively count twice: once in the standings and again when determining who owns a tie. The postseason field is getting smaller. The uncertainty surrounding it is not.
