The Tennessee baseball team is in a rough patch as they head into the final weekend of regular season play. The Vols have lost five of their last six series. However, none of those losses came via a sweep—Tennessee has had a chance to win each series but just can’t seem to close out the rubber game.
Despite the recent struggles, the Vols feature one of the most dominant starting pitchers in all of college baseball. Liam Doyle, Tennessee’s ace, is a left-handed pitcher who consistently gives his team a chance to win every Friday night. This season, he boasts a 9–2 record, a 2.17 ERA, and 127 strikeouts—outstanding numbers that earlier in the year had him projected as the potential No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming MLB Draft. If that happens, Doyle would become just the second player in school history to be selected first overall.
Doyle has a personality all his own—just like every player on the team. Earlier this season against Texas A&M, Doyle was throwing a no-hitter before being pulled due to blisters. After the game, he shared how badly he wanted to stay in.
“Tennessee's Liam Doyle said he offered a token protest when Tony Vitello told him he was coming out after six no-hit innings against Texas A&M, but that Vitello is 'pretty d*mn good at his job' and pretty hard to argue with, so he took the L and moved on,” Wes Rucker posted.
In a recent mock draft, Doyle is projected to go No. 2 overall to the Los Angeles Angels, which would pair him with former Vol legend and national champion Christian Moore. Although the two never played together at Tennessee, the team has built a culture that makes every player like a brother to one another. Seeing them together in the pros would be a thrilling sight for Tennessee fans.
