MLB insider says Padres face 'long shot' to land Red Sox star with 51 RBI

The San Diego Padres are looking to make some noise in October and are within striking distance of the NL West division. However, if the Padres want to scare the Los Angeles Dodgers, they’ll need to fix any issues in their squad ahead of the MLB trade deadline.

San Diego have Manny Machado and Fernando Tatís Jr. in their lineup, but the Padres could be looking for another impact bat. Nonetheless, the player that they desire right now feels more like a pipe dream than a serious trade target to bolster their lineup.

On Monday, MLB insider Jon Heyman appeared on MLB Network and shared that the Padres have their sight set on Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran. However, any move for the 28-year-old at the deadline appears to be unrealistic.

“There are a lot of very good relievers out there,” Heyman said. “That is one of their priorities, believe it or not. I think they’ll look at starting pitching. I think they’ll look at catcher, though there aren’t a ton of great catchers out there. Right now, Maldonado is doing a very nice job with a pitching staff. They are looking for a bat, so I think they are going to look at left field.

“Certainly, they’ve been on Jarren Duran—at least since May, probably for more than a year. They love the guy. But at this point, I would say that’s probably a long shot. We know Boston has a glut in the outfield, but I think they probably hold a Duran. If he is traded, it’ll be a surprise if it’s anybody but the Padres.”

Duran isn’t producing at the level that made him an All-Star last season, but the numbers are respectable. This season, the outfielder is posting a .257 batting average, nine home runs, and 51 RBI for the Red Sox.
