MLB insider reveals Red Sox' chances at reunion with $79 million MVP candidate are now slim to none

The Boston Red Sox will probably be looking for another slugger this offseason, as they’ve realized their offense crumbles without their rookie sensation, Roman Anthony. The Sox were linked to a former member of the team in Kyle Schwarber, but now it seems unlikely.

According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, Schwarber’s current team, the Philadelphia Phillies, are very likely to re-sign them.

“The expectation is that designated hitter Kyle Schwarber will remain with the Philadelphia Phillies. A four-year deal at $30-million plus per season seems realistic, in part, because his leadership adds to his value. But there is no obvious free-agent precedent for Schwarber, who will be 33 at the start of next season,” Rosenthal wrote.

The Sox may be able to match that projected contract, as they freed up a massive amount of cap space when they traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. However, the Sox also plan on re-signing Alex Bregman if he opts-out of his contract, who will command a huge contract.

However, Bregman is having a massive slump in this final month of the regular season, so he may opt-in for one more year. If that happens, the Sox could sign Schwarber to a better deal than the Phillies. And, even if the Sox go through with a re-sign of Bregman, they still could go for Schwarber with their extra cap space.

Hopefully the Sox can find a way to get Schwarber back in Boston, as his bat power would be a definite upgrade for the Sox’ streaky offense. Boston is so close to having a championship team, and Schwarber could be the key.
