As the Boston Red Sox look to build their roster for the 2025 season and beyond, they'll have to decide which players they'll keep in a Red Sox jersey and build around and which they should trade.
First baseman Triston Casas is one player who keeps getting brought up in trade rumors this offseason, and the most recent example came on Thursday night when ESPN's Buster Olney suggested that Boston should consider moving on from the young stud this offseason.
“It feels like this needs to be the winter where they make a decision on Triston Casas," Olney said on the "Baseball Tonight" podcast. "At some point, Rafael Devers is gonna have to change positions and move off third base, and if they’re gonna move him to first base, now is the time to trade Casas because he’s had three of the last four years affected by injuries. He had that one monster season which fueled the perception of him in a positive way in the industry, but last year was another down year. If he has another down year, man, it would be hard, his value would drop precipitously. We've seen how the St. Louis Cardinals, in recent years, have seen the erosion of so many of their prospects because they don't make hard decisions on some of these guys. The Red Sox need to do that I think with Triston Casas this winter.”
Devers' agent has already stated this offseason that he's not moving positions any time soon, but if he does move, it would make more sense to see him go to designated hitter.
When healthy, Casas has been one of the best first basemen in baseball, but Olney is correct in saying that he's had a difficult time staying on the field.
