Miami Marlins' young slugger Jakob Marsee was not a huge college name. He attended Central Michigan University and played his summer ball in the Northwoods League.
He would go on to catch the attention of the San Diego Padres, and they would end up drafting him in the sixth round of the 2022 MLB Draft.
He would spend two years in San Diego before he was traded to the Miami Marlins alongside Dillon Head, Nathan Martorella, and Woo-suk Go in exchange for Luis Arraez.
MLB analyst spotlights Marlins' youngster as a prime extension candidate
Miami would then give Marsee his shot in August of last season. Across 55 games, the slugger hit .292/.363/.478 with five home runs, 33 runs batted in, and 14 stolen bases.
He would go on to win National League Rookie of the Month for August.
On top of what he did with the bat, he was also just as impressive in the outfield. He recorded an impressive 4 OAA, which would be on pace for a top-10 defensive outfielder over a full season.
With the young slugger pressing forward, MLB.com's Mark Feinsand makes the case for Miami to offer him an extension.
"Having played only 55 games in his rookie year, Marsee is under club control for six more seasons, creating no urgency to sign him to an extension anytime soon. But we've seen smaller-market teams roll the dice with early-career deals, which create financial certainty for the club and a modicum of security for the player. Marsee performed well last season, posting an 842 OPS and 1.9 bWAR in his 55-game debut, showing himself to be the type of young talent the Marlins can build around."
We have seen teams lock up their younger talent early, so why not the Marlins? It would save them money and give Marsee a financial boost while still allowing him to be a free agent later on.
