The NBA offseason is just starting to get underway. As many players will soon hit the open market, those with player options are expected to also test the waters and get the biggest bang for their buck.
Bobby Portis is one of those with a player option for next season. The Milwaukee Bucks’ sixth man — who has also played for the Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks, and Washington Wizards — could test the open market should he decline his $13.4 million player option.
As such, rumors have swirled that the former NBA Champion could be interested in joining the Golden State Warriors. Portis addressed these rumors with confusion on FanDuel TV’s Run It Back.
“My first thought when it comes to these reports is, 'How do these people know so much?” Portis said. “Who’s telling all of this, who’s behind the scenes, who’s calling and checking in and all this.”
Portis and Warriors head coach Steve Kerr have some familiarity with each other. Portis played for Team USA, coached by Kerr during the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, where they didn’t earn a medal.
Portis has been one of the NBA’s best reserves since joining the Milwaukee Bucks in 2020, averaging 13.6 points and 8.3 rebounds in five seasons with the Bucks. He played a major role in Milwaukee’s championship run in 2021, averaging 8.8 points and 5.0 rebounds in 20 playoff games that season. The 30-year-old will have until June 29 to make a decision on his player option.
