Mike Vrabel unveils Patriots' Super Bowl return plan and it all has to do with 'oranges'

A taste of the Super Bowl, without holding the Vince Lombardi Trophy, is never enough. Coach Mike Vrabel and the Drake Maye-led New England Patriots know this too well. They did everything throughout the offseason to get back to the big game. With the 2026 NFL season around the corner, all they have to do is execute their new schemes while remaining healthy. This time around, however, they are employing a whole new philosophy to exceed expectations. It all has to do with oranges, yes, the fruit.

Bryce Baringer explained why the citrus fruit has become the center of their pursuit for a Super Bowl win.

Vrabel and Maye's Patriots center Super Bowl pursuit philosophy with oranges

The 29-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks clearly put a huge chip on the Patriots' shoulders. Coach Mike Vrabel and Drake Maye could not score until the Super Bowl's12:27 mark in the 4th quarter against the rough Seahawks defense. They hope to turn things around entering the 2026 NFL season.

Bryce Baringer said the Patriots head coach has introduced a new team philosophy. Coach Vrabel made it very simple. The Patriots are oranges, and they need to be squeezed in high-pressure situations while still delivering a quality team output, via Mike Reiss of ESPN.

"Whatever you squeeze is what you are. That's you. He's trying to pull that out of us. He made the analogy that if someone squeezes an orange, watermelon juice won't come out. So, when we're squeezed, we have to be that team; it needs to be those four pillars of our identity," the Patriots punter said about Coach Vrabel.

What exactly are these four pillars that the Patriots need to stand by throughout the 2026 NFL season? They are: effort and finish; ball security and disruption; details, techniques and fundamentals; and making great decisions. Those were the same principles Maye and Co. employed, which earned them a 14-win record, the top seed in AFC East, and a Super Bowl berth.

Coach Vrabel has made it abundantly clear that the Patriots are retaining these four pillars to finally get the job done when the Super Bowl rolls around. There are even hopes of eventually becoming a dynasty, just like how they were with Tom Brady.

"I don't think the messaging will be much different. It's got to be consistent. We have to be able to build every year, to start over and figure out the things that we do well, what we like and what the players have confidence in. And we have to be able to push the envelope on some things that we weren't very good at last year," the Patriots head coach declared.

Coach Vrabel isn't just running the same schemes and rotations, either. Maye is also getting valuable weapons he didn't have in their Super Bowl run: A.J. Brown, Romeo Doubs, Alijah Vera-Tucker, Eli Raridon, Reggie Gilliam, Greg Van Roten, and Caleb Lomu, among others. The Patriots defense also got way stronger with the additions of Dre'Mont Jones, Kevin Byard, Mike Brown, Kindle Vildor, and Namdi Obiazor.

Saying that the Patriots are going all-in to become yet another NFL dynasty is an understatement at this point. Coach Vrabel has done everything to keep them at the top of the AFC, and all there is to do is finish the job.

Can the Patriots retain their identity as ‘oranges’ in high-pressure situations and finally hoist the Vince Lombardi trophy? It's very likely.
