Without knowing it a few months back, the Philadelphia 76ers have been one of the bigger teams in the NBA offseason, whether it was adding some immense depth off of the bench, with the likes of Anfernee Simons or Ariel Hukporti, or pulling off the blockbuster deal that landed Jaylen Brown in the City of Brotherly Love: the 76ers' front office has been busy to say the least.
While Philadelphia made it to the Eastern Conference semi-finals last season, falling short in a four-game sweep to the eventual league champions, the New York Knicks, they did so off a rocky season, only taking down the Boston Celtics in an underdog effort in a seven-game series.
But now, with the moves that have been made, the Sixers are being talked about in a different light, not as the underdogs themselves, but rather as contenders that can represent the Eastern Conference in the NBA Finals, and the recently appointed President of Basketball Operations in Philadelphia, Mike Gansey, agrees.
What'd Gansey say about the Sixers' quality after the Brown trade?
Gansey was interviewed during the Sixers' match against the Detroit Pistons and talked about the impact the Jaylen Brown trade could have on the Sixers, feeling that when you pair the former champion with two hungry players in Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe, the team is ready to go to the upper echelons in the Eastern Conference.
"Yeah, I think so. I mean, Jaylen [Brown] brings just such a different dynamic to our group, and with Tyrese [Maxey] and VJ [Edgecombe], those guys are so explosive, they're so young, they just want to win and play at the highest level. I think Jaylen is really going to help push them to a higher level, and obviously, the big fella is the x-factor for us," Gansey explained.
This shouldn't come as a shock, given that Brown was an integral part of the Celtics' success last season, helping lift the team while his co-star, Jayson Tatum, was recovering from an Achilles tear from the previous playoffs. Brown would produce a career year in the scoring department, dropping an average of 28.7 points a night, while tying his career-high in rebounds.
So pairing that with the offensive powerhouse that Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe already were last season, as well as a healthy Joel Embiid, would obviously give Gansey the belief that the team has the ability to do something special in the years to come. It's worth noting that the Sixers might not even be done in the free agency market just yet, as they still have one remaining roster spot to bring in yet another quality piece.
