Michigan wins on second Hail Mary pass in controversial ending to avoid brutal upset

What a start to the Kyle Whittingham era in Ann Arbor.

Held to just seven points for the first 59 minutes and 59 seconds against Western Michigan on Saturday, the Wolverines came up with a miracle, perhaps with some help from the clock.

After scoring a touchdown on the very first possession of the game, Michigan punted six times and turned the ball over twice while the Broncos orchestrated four scoring drives. They looked to be heading toward the first major upset of the college season when Bryce Underwood’s Hail Mary soared out the back of the end zone as time expired.

WMU players cheered. Michigan players hung their heads.

But after further review, there was another second put on the clock.

Underwood didn’t squander his second chance, collecting with J.J. Buchanan to win what is already sure to be one of the most controversial games of the season.
