Michael Irvin warned CeeDee Lamb of No. 88 pressure — Cowboys WR's reply is pure fire

Despite five Pro Bowl selections and three All-Pro honors, Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb isn't celebrating. When Hall of Fame legend Michael Irvin recently praised him for living up to the pressure of wearing the iconic No. 88 jersey, Lamb fired back with a response that reveals everything about his championship mindset.

The exchange began when Irvin appeared on his podcast, "The White House Pod," and shared the story of how he warned Lamb about the immense burden that comes with donning the number worn by Cowboys legends. Irvin recounted the moment when Lamb, initially wanting to wear No. 2, had to decide whether he could handle the weight of franchise history.

"Michael, I've always wanted to wear No. 2, I said, 'You gotta do what's going to make you do what you gotta do every morning. If you wear No. 88, there's a whole lot comes with that. Soon as you get it, you're going to raise the hope up of a whole Cowboys nation, and it's a lot of pressure. If it's too much for you, we understand," Irvin recounted on his podcast

Irvin described laying out the stakes for the young receiver from Oklahoma. The Hall of Famer made it clear that accepting No. 88 meant instantly raising the expectations of an entire fanbase and would create pressure that could crush players who weren't mentally prepared for the spotlight.

The Cowboys legend revealed how he gave Lamb an out, telling him they would understand if the pressure proved too much and would simply keep searching for the next player worthy of the number. But Lamb accepted the challenge, and Irvin praised him for delivering on that promise over the past five seasons.

The Hall of Famer continued: "If you are not him, we will keep searching for the next … the next day he said, 'I'm going to wear it, I'm gonna do it,' now go deliver, and he has delivered."

When video of Irvin's comments circulated on social media, Lamb responded on X with a message that stunned fans. "Just being honest. I haven't done anything yet. Grateful always, Appreciate u Mike for sharing, I need more. No greed just hunger," Lamb wrote.

The 26-year-old receiver has earned five consecutive Pro Bowl selections and three All-Pro honors. In 2023, he led the NFL with 135 receptions, accumulated 1,749 yards and scored 12 touchdowns, good enough for third place in Offensive Player of the Year voting. But Lamb's 2025 season presented challenges that may explain his hunger for more.

He finished with 75 receptions for 1,077 yards and three touchdowns across 14 games, the fewest of his career. The Cowboys struggled alongside him, posting a disappointing 7-9-1 record and missing the playoffs.

CeeDee Lamb is living the legacy of Cowboys legendary number

Unlike many franchises that retire jerseys worn by their greatest players, Dallas has kept No. 88 in active circulation as a living legacy passed down through generations of elite receivers.

Drew Pearson first made the number special during the 1970s, earning three Pro Bowl selections and leading the league in receiving in 1977. Irvin then took it to legendary status through the 1990s, winning three Super Bowls and finishing as the franchise's all-time leading receiver with 11,904 yards. Dez Bryant continued the tradition through much of the 2010s, dominating from 2011-2014 with at least 1,200 yards and 12 touchdowns in each season from 2012-2014.

When Lamb first met with the three previous wearers of No. 88, they bonded over the weight the jersey carries. "You do understand what's coming? You do understand this responsibility?' It's pressure for others. It's absolute promise for us," Irvin told Lamb during that initial meeting. "You're in the middle of it all. It all comes through as pressure for a lot of people. It just so happens to be home for 88s."

Lamb has already gotten himself among that elite company statistically. He currently ranks fourth in Cowboys history with 571 career receptions and sixth with 7,416 receiving yards. With continued production, he'll likely pass both Bryant and Irvin on the franchise's all-time reception list, though that will require strong chemistry with quarterback Dak Prescott.
