Miami (OH)'s reward for a faultless regular season and near-perfect campaign? A First Four fixture against a daunting SMU side.
The RedHawks were the cream of the crop in the MAC for much of the regular season, besting all comers to become just the fourth team to complete the regular-season tilt without a blemish. They weren't able to maintain that form in the conference tournament, suffering an unenviable defeat to UMass in their first game. Still, they figured to do enough to secure a postseason berth.
As it turned out, they did. They have their work cut out for them if they want to play in the Big Dance in earnest.
To get to the gleaming ballroom, they'll have to get through the Mustangs first. SMU's 20-13 record might not dazzle at first glance. But a closer look at their games paints a far rosier picture. The Mustangs scored a double-digit victory over North Carolina and fell by single digits to Duke, Virginia, Miami and, most recently, Louisville. While SMU could be a little inconsistent during the regular season, it's more than capable of going on a run.
