Mexico manager warns 'you can't underestimate anyone' as Gold Cup matchup looms

The Mexico national team is preparing for their second group stage match of the Gold Cup against Suriname in Arlington, Texas. Mexico is coming off a cagey 3-2 win against the Dominican Republic.

While Mexico are favorites to win the Gold Cup, no one can be counted out of the tournament. Javier Aguirre is well aware of the threat Suriname could pose to Mexico.

What did Javier Aguirre say before Mexico's match?

Aguirre spoke to the media ahead of Mexico's match and urged the players and fans to not get too comfortable. The manager said, "There are no small teams in this tournament - I’ve said it before, and I stand by it. In the Gold Cup, you can't underestimate anyone."

Aguirre pointed to the tough match that Mexico had against Switzerland in a friendly earlier this month. His side lost 2-4, but Aguirre saw the match as a learning opportunity.

"The loss to Switzerland taught us valuable lessons. We're on the right path, and not just in results, but in our approach as well," Aguirre said.

Mexico played with energy against the Dominican Republic, something they'll need to repeat against Suriname. Aguirre's side might be heavy favorites to win the match, but he has urged his players to keep their intensity no matter what.

Despite the discrepancy in the FIFA rankings of the two teams, there are no easy games in the Gold Cup. Mexico are ranked 14, whereas Suriname are 137.

Aguirre reminded the media that this tournament is not easy to play in, saying, "But the matches have been tight. We've both had to fight for every point. Nothing is guaranteed in this competition."
