Just an hour after the New York Yankees lost again to the Cleveland Guardians, the New York Mets officially staked their claim.
On paper and on the field right now, the Mets are New York's best team.
In fact, the Mets aren't just the best team in the Big Apple. They're the best team in baseball.
That's how things stand after the Mets' 10-inning, walk-off win over the Phillies on Wednesday afternoon.
These Mets are now 18-7, officially the best record in MLB.
Just as remarkably, the Mets just went 7-0 on their homestand.

It nearly didn't happen this way, but Pete Alonso delivered a game-tying double in the ninth off flamethrower Jose Alvarado.
Then in the 10th, much-maligned veteran Starling Marte delivered the walk-off single to prompt celebrations at Citi Field.
This is how it's supposed to be for the Mets, who may have had a Subway Series last year in the World Series if not for the might Dodgers.
Steve Cohen is shelling out the big bucks. He swiped Juan Soto from the crosstown rival. The pitching rotation might not be superbly heralded, but they're getting the job done, too.
Starting pitcher Tylor Megill may have summed it up best recently.
Megill said, "It's a good time to be a New York Met."
Yes, indeed it is.
