Mets-Twins trade idea brings $73 million All-Star to New York

The New York Mets' starting rotation has exceeded expectations without Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas even playing yet. However, that may not stop them from adding an ace to the staff.

Mets starters have a league-best 2.24 ERA. Griffin Canning, Clay Holmes, Tylor Megill, David Peterson and Kodai Senga have all been great. Manaea and Montas are on the way back to the rotation, but the Mets may want to leave no doubt in their starting group. Bleacher Report's Tim Kelly listed the Mets among teams that could swing a trade for Pablo López.

"Who would be a fit? Well, probably just about every team in contention," wrote Kelly. "We previously mentioned the Cubs, Mets, Yankees and Padres as possible fits for (Sandy) Alcántara. Those teams would make sense for López, should he be available, as could the Atlanta Braves, San Francisco Giants and Houston Astros."

The Minnesota Twins are off to a 13-18 start and could be looking at trading away players for prospects near the deadline. López has a 2.25 ERA this season. Adding him would move one of the Mets' talented starters to the bullpen. However, injuries happen, and having depth in the rotation can never hurt.

López signed a four-year, $73 million deal in 2023 and is under contract through 2027. He was an All-Star in 2023 and is looking like that player again this season. Adding López would potentially cause problems when Manaea, Montas, Senga, Canning, Holmes, Megill and Peterson are all healthy. However, moving someone to the bullpen would be worth it for a starter of López's caliber.

The Mets have a 3.17 bullpen ERA. Moving an elite starter into the bullpen could make them even better in that regard, setting themselves up for a deep October run.
