Mets trade idea brings Zac Gallen to Queens for struggling star

13 hours ago 2

The New York Mets could be looking for starting pitching depth at the trade deadline. Zac Gallen of the Arizona Diamondbacks could be a rental arm they can get back on track.

From 2022-2024, Gallen had a 3.20 ERA in 93 starts. This season, he has a 5.60 ERA in 22 starts and has given up a career high 23 home runs. He will be a free agent after the season, and he could slot into the Mets' rotation. The Mets have Kodai Senga, Sean Manaea, Clay Holmes, Frankie Montas and David Peterson right now.

The Mets' rotation is not bad, but they may be willing to take a chance on Gallen. SNY's Andy Martino revealed the Mets are "open" to trading Mark Vientos, and FanSided's James Nolan suggested the Mets use him to get Gallen.

"New York has proven to help pitchers regain their form with their pitching lab," wrote Nolan. "Luis Severino last season is a prime example of such. If they believe they can help Gallen regain his form, they’d have a phenomenal rotation. These low-risk moves could help the Mets, but they can also haunt them if they trade Vientos for someone like Gallen. Losing a young player who was a crucial piece in their magical 2024 season for a player who would be with them for a few months could bite them in the long run. It remains to be seen if Vientos will be moved at the deadline, but it’s starting to make more and more sense the closer it comes."

There is no guarantee that the Mets can fox Gallen. However, there is also no guarantee that Vientos can ever replicate his season from last year. He had 27 home runs and an .837 OPS in the regular season, and five home runs with a .998 OPS in October.

The Mets would not trade Vientos, who is under club control through 2030, for Gallen straight up. He would likely also yield the Mets a young player.
