Mets projected to use trade deadline plan that's incredibly boring

1 hour ago 3

The New York Mets are having some issues this season, as even though they just swept the Detroit Tigers, they're still 18-25 and 11.5 games out of first place in the NL East.

But, beyond their win-loss record, there are a lot of concerns about this Mets roster. It would not be a surprise if things continued to go south from here on out. And depending on how things go, their trade deadline plans might see some drastic changes.

However, Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller is projecting that the Mets will have a trade deadline plan with the assumption of the team not collapsing from here on out.

"The recent promotion of top outfield prospect A.J. Ewing further suggests they have no intentions of giving up on this season," Miller writes. "But even assuming they're in it to win it, they're unlikely to throw much good money after bad, already staring at an all-in payroll north of $500M."

This trade deadline plan that Miller is projecting for the Mets would be an incredibly boring one. Not only do the Mets not sell, but they don't even act as buyers.

Mets are projected to have incredibly boring trade deadline

While the Mets have already spent a ton of money on this roster, and they shouldn't be looking to spend so much at this year's trade deadline, there are ways to improve the roster without spending a ridiculous sum of money.

For example, if the Mets could convince the Washington Nationals to swing an intra-division trade, they could acquire Foster Griffin, a rental who's on a very cheap deal, to improve their starting rotation.

The Mets don't have to pursue the players costing teams the most money this season, as they could target other players on cheap rental contracts, or target younger players who aren't going to cost a lot of money, but maybe a lot of trade assets.

A much more entertaining trade deadline for the Mets would likely only come if things go south this season. Clay Holmes, Freddy Peralta, and likely many others could be on the move this year if the Mets are well out of the playoff race by August 3rd.

It's a fascinating conundrum for the Mets, as the "boring" trade deadline scenario might actually be the best one for the team, whereas a much more exciting deadline would mean the team collapses further this season.

If the Mets have a boring trade deadline, it might be a good thing, assuming such a boring deadline coincides with the Mets' rebounding as a team. If they don't rebound in time, but still don't sell, it would be an even greater disaster than simply missing the playoffs.
