It is no secret that the New York Mets were baseball's most disappointing team in 2026, with injuries and poor play contributing to their struggles. This offseason will be a significant one for the organization as it looks to put together the right roster for a turnaround.

The Mets know where their biggest priorities lie. Whether it is the bullpen or the starting rotation, New York is going to need to add pitching this offseason.

“After finishing nine games worse than the previous year, the New York Mets enter a pivotal offseason with several holes to fill. Upgrading the starting rotation remains a top priority, but the Mets also need to revamp their bullpen after trading away four relievers at the deadline,” SI’s Tommy Kelson wrote.

One thing that is clear in New York is that Nolan McLean has all the talent necessary to become the team's ace in 2027 and beyond. However, CBS Sports' Dayn Perry believes the Mets will make a major push to sign Tarik Skubal.

“I'll say the Mets top all offers by a margin sufficient to overcome their lack of appeal compared to the usual suspects (meaning, mostly, the Dodgers). They definitely need a stabilizing force in the rotation outside of Nolan McLean, and they also need a vibes shift after the deeply disappointing 2026 campaign. Landing the biggest fish of all on the market would provide all that and meet a clear need,” Perry wrote.

Landing the best pitcher available would bring a new level of excitement and stability to the organization moving forward. Skubal has already won two Cy Young Awards and could add even more to his résumé in the years ahead.

This season, Skubal played on a $32 million deal with the Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Dodgers. He will have the opportunity to choose where he wants to play next, but his next destination could depend on the league's salary structure and whether a salary cap comes into play.
