The New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies are locked in a tight race atop the National League East. The Mets could be aggressive in trying to ensure they win the division.
The Mets could be targeting third basemen at the deadline. Mark Vientos has not lived up to the hype after his stellar season last year, albeit he did miss time with an injury. He has just a .640 OPS. The Mets’ other third base options are not too inspiring either.
Eugenio Suárez is reportedly available, and the Mets could use him. He was named an All-Star this season and has 31 home runs with an .889 OPS. SNY’s John Harper predicted the Mets would land him before the trade deadline.
“The caveat is that If Mark Vientos mashes for the next two weeks, coming off his big weekend in Kansas City, and looks like he’s found his ’24 form, then that would ease the need for a slugger to hit behind Pete Alonso, wrote Harper. “But in the first half the Mets were very much in need of another big bat to lengthen the lineup and deliver in RISP situations. Assuming Suarez is okay, after getting hit on the left hand by a pitch in Tuesday night’s All-Star Game, he’d be a great fit at third base. And because he’s a free agent after the season the Mets wouldn’t be making a long-term commitment.”
The New York Yankees also figure to be in the market for Suárez. However, the Mets may be able to offer a better package given their farm system.

The ideal scenario for the Mets would be Vientos finding his form, allowing the Mets to focus on adding to other parts of the roster. However, Suárez would change the outlook of the Mets offense is Vientos can’t come through.
