Mets predicted to cut ties with $2.5 million World Series champion, nine-time All-Star closer to make room in Devin Williams-led bullpen

The New York Mets have done a pretty good job reconstructing their roster after losing two superstars, but there are a couple minor things they need to address by the end of Spring Training. One of those things is their bullpen.

Fansided’s Zachary Rotman predicts the Mets will make some cuts, and that former MLB superstar closer Craig Kimbrel won’t be making the Mets’ big league roster.

“There are several things going against Kimbrel, though. First and foremost, he's on a Minor League deal. This means that to roster him, the Mets would have to think he's one of the seven or eight best relievers in their organization and also DFA someone on their 40-man roster to make room for him. What are the odds that both of these things come to fruition? Second, the Mets are likely to run with a six-man rotation, giving them only seven slots for relievers…It'd be a fun story to see the Mets roster Kimbrel, especially after he tormented them for years with the rival Atlanta Braves, but it's hard to envision it happening without injuries,” Rotman wrote.

This past season, Kimbrel was able to post a 2.25 ERA, 17 Ks, and 1.417 in 14 games. However, looking at the full 2024 season before that, he had a 5.33 ERA, 73 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.357 with 23 saves.

These numbers just don’t support Kimbrel for another full-ish season. He only cost the Mets $2.5 million, so eating his contract wouldn’t be too hard. Or, they simply just let him ride out in AAA.

While it hurts to see a legend go in such a way, the Mets need to focus on winning. And it looks like Kimbrel isn’t part of the equation.
