Mets' Pete Alonso receives enormous $210 million, career-defining contract update

The New York Mets are set for a very interesting offseason — one that could either be a lot of fun or get away from them quickly. From the moment the Mets lost to the Miami Marlins to end the season, it became clear that franchise home run leader Pete Alonso wasn’t going to return.

“After the Mets crashed out of playoff contention with a 4-0 loss to the Marlins on Sunday in their final game of the season, first baseman Pete Alonso said he will opt out of the final year and $24 million on his contract,” MLB.com’sAnthony DiComo wrote.

During the season, it was obvious this was the path Alonso was heading down. He repeatedly refused to commit to anything beyond this year — something unusual for a player who wants to return.

“Playing for this organization, this city - they've continued to believe in me. I love playing here. There's some great guys in this clubhouse, some great people on the staff. Every single day, it's been a pleasure coming to work and putting on the orange and blue. I've really appreciated it and have been nothing but full of gratitude every single day. Nothing is guaranteed, but we'll see what happens - I've loved being a Met. Hopefully, they've appreciated me the same,” Alonso told the media.

With winter approaching, Alonso is expected to receive a massive contract, and it seems he already has an idea of his price.

“Predicted Contract: 7 years, $210 million,” Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter wrote.

Alonso is going to get a huge payday — it’s just a matter of who will give it to him. The Mets know what it will take to bring him back, but Alonso doesn’t seem eager to return on their terms.

The Mets are going to be one of the most fascinating teams to watch this offseason, with several different paths they could take. Alonso, meanwhile, is finally set to land the hefty contract he’s been chasing.
