Mets once-celebrated prospects’ deep struggles will raise plenty of trade deadline questions

TORONTO — The day is likely approaching to dissolve a once celebrated Mets young core that hasn’t ripened as the organization might have hoped.

Francisco Alvarez, Mark Vientos and Brett Baty have all shown flashes of excellence over the past few seasons, but collectively the group’s lack of production is a significant factor in the team’s dismal play over the last calendar year.

The Mets have received a jolt from the new wave of organizational talent — Carson Benge and A.J. Ewing have arrived to bring athleticism and high-ceiling offense to the equation — but the older wave hasn’t fulfilled potential.

For a team that began the day 35-50 and almost destined to become sellers before the Aug. 3 trade deadline, the question looms regarding how much, if any, of this group will remain with the club.
