New York Mets' rookie Jonah Tong was handed the ball on Friday for a start against the Texas Rangers. On a six-game losing streak, the club was hoping Tong could get the job done and put them in the win column.
Unfortunately, the Mets' starter did not have his best stuff on the mound. He only lasted two outs, giving up six runs on four hits while walking three batters. This forced the club to go to the bullpen early, losing the game by a score of 8-3.
Tong has now started three games, putting together a 1-2 record with an 8.49 ERA. He has had trouble getting outs at the MLB level, but his organization was quick to have his back.
Mets' manager challenges Jonah Tong to 'flush' disastrous Friday start
Mets' manager Carlos Mendoza understands the pressure put on Jonah Tong to perform. He was just in Double-A a month ago, and yesterday he was going toe-to-toe with two-time Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom. Mendoza wants his pitcher to stay positive despite his struggles, via SNY's Robert Sanchez.
"Keep your head up, keep going," said Mendoza. "There's no other way around it. Flush that one out and just keep moving forward."
Tong is taking this as a learning experience. He will reflect on his performance and try to come out stronger in his next start.
"(I'm) just gonna have some time to reflect on this and get ready for the next one and just go from there," said Tong.
