Frankie Montas’ brutal string of starts on his rehab assignment won’t prevent him from making his Mets debut as a starter after all.
Manager Carlos Mendoza said there’s a “good chance” Montas will join the Mets’ rotation and start next week during their series against the Braves.

“We feel like mechanically he’s getting there,” Mendoza told reporters before the Mets finished their series in Atlanta. “Look, we need starters here. We signed him to be a starter for this team, and we’re gonna give him a chance.”

Montas, who sustained a strained lat early in spring training after inking a two-year, $34 million deal in the offseason to be the Mets’ next pitching project, finished his rehab assignment with a 12.05 ERA across six outings.
He then said he’d be open to any pitching role, even if that meant the bullpen.
Montas made his final start Wednesday for Triple-A Syracuse, surrendering five runs on seven hits, and did a better job — especially with his secondary pitches — navigating the first time through the order, according to Mendoza.
