Mets make room for returning Francisco Alvarez in flurry of roster moves

Francisco Alvarez officially is back.

The Mets promoted the sizzling catcher from Triple-A Syracuse and demoted Hayden Senger ahead of a series opener against the Angels at Citi Field on Monday.

Alvarez had been sent down nearly a month ago, on June 22, amid struggles with his bat and glove. The Mets wanted the 23-year-old to improve with consistent playing time, and the belief is he has done so.

Alvarez caught fire in Syracuse, posting a 1.233 OPS in 19 games. He had blasted seven home runs in his last six games, looking like the can’t-miss prospect he had been a few years ago. His defense, too, has received high grades at the lower level.

The Mets have been happy with Luis Torrens’ glove, but they have received little offense from any of their catchers. Perhaps that will change.

The Mets also brought back right-hander Rico Garcia, whom they claimed off waivers from the Yankees, outrighted lefty Richard Lovelady to Triple-A Syracuse and transferred righty Dedniel Nunez to the 60-day injured list.
