The New York Mets, by the numbers, should've made it at least another inning.
But when Masyn Winn blooped a ball into right field, in front of a diving Carson Benge, Wednesday's game was over. The St. Louis Cardinals had walked-off the Mets, 2-1.
Benge had the odds in his favor of catching the ball, though.
Statcast said that the blooper had a 75% catch probability. That's based on fielder positioning and historical data. More often than not, this is an out.
With two outs in the inning, it would've sent the game to the 12th.
This is how the play looked:

There's at least a tiny bit of hesitation from Benge as he approaches the infielders. It definitely could've been shaping up for a huge collision.
Instead, no one catches the ball, and the runner on third gets to trot home and win the baseball game.
There's no guarantee the Mets would've scored as the game went on, but at least they would've still had a chance.
In this case, it was game over as soon as that ball dropped. And considering the lack of grace in Benge's approach, it ends up feeling like quite the bummer.
