The New York Mets had one of the more embarrassing seasons this year, going from the top of the National League all the way down to missing the playoffs. Now, they’ll have to wrestle with the idea of losing one of their top stars, Pete Alonso, in free agency this offseason.
Fansided’s Wynston Wilcox has a replacement, though, one they can get by next offseason. Wilcox predicts that with the Detroit Tigers' brutal ALDS loss, Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal will want out. He’ll want to go somewhere that can back him up with run support; somewhere like the Mets.
“New York had a disappointing 2025 season by their standards, as they still came up short of the postseason despite being big spenders and landing Soto a year ago. Though the Mets are probably a year away from being where they want to be anyway, I know adding a guy like Skubal is probably on their shortlist as they overhaul their starting rotation,” Wilcox wrote.
Wilcox continued, stating injuries have plagued the Mets, and getting Skubal would bring reliable production to their pitching.
“The Mets were hit with a lot of injuries to that group, which led to a collapse after a strong start. Adding Skubal would give them a certified ace; even if their depth got depleted, they could rely on Skubal to produce. The Mets are in a much better position than the Tigers, offensively. If Skubal could win with Detroit, imagine what he’d do with a strong lineup to back him up,” Wilcox stated.
Adding Skubal to a rotation with an ace in Kodai Senga, young stars in Jonah Tong, Noah McLean, and Brandon Sproat, the Mets’ pitching would be feared. Hopefully, the Mets are ready to shell out for Skubal and give themselves a real chance to win the World Series.
