Ahead of the 2023 season, Kodai Senga was a name on the open market that a ton of teams were chasing. Scouts were impressed by his standout ability in the NPB and were sure that success would follow him to MLB.
However, that has not been the case so far. While he has flashed his potential, a shoulder injury in 2024 would cost him a few months. And this past season, he sustained a hamstring injury, which was bad timing as he was leading the majors with his 1.47 ERA across 13 starts.
After returning from his hamstring injury, he would struggle. Senga was ultimately sent down to Triple-A to end the season.

Mets' Kodai Senga tagged as 'most available' RHP on the trade market
When Senga went down, the Mets saw some new faces step up. Nolan McClean was excellent in his debut, and Brandon Sproat and Jonah Tong also made their debuts.
With these new arms showing up, it could spell disaster for Senga. Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller tags him as the most obtainable trade option for teams looking for a starting RHP.
"If they were to replace Senga's roster spot with the league-minimum salary of Jonah Tong or Brandon Sproat, that's about $30M less they'd be spending after factoring in the tax penalty. And considering they booted Senga to Triple-A last fall, they might be saving $30M and reaping the benefits of a better rotation."
Miller mentions that the Mets would be saving about $30 million if they decide to move on from Senga. That is quite a bit of money to save on someone that the club is not fully confident in. On top of that, Senga still can turn around a lackluster 2025 season if a team were to take a flyer on him and bring back a solid package for the club.
