Mets haven't been clutch since 2024 with 1 brutal statistic that's hard to believe

The New York Mets have been one of the biggest storylines this season, but for all of the wrong reasons. It's been such a terrible start; they might be sellers at this year's trade deadline.

While that alone is bad, some truly eye-opening statistics highlight just how bad things have gone not just this year, but last year as well.

USA Today's Bob Nightengale shared one statistic that might be the most alarming. The Mets might be the least clutch team in MLB since 2024, as this comeback statistic is hard to believe.

Mets have a hard-to-believe, brutal clutch statistic

"Hard to believe, but the Mets still have not won a single game when trailing after eight innings since the end of the 2024 season," Nightengale writes.

This statistic is seemingly impossible to comprehend. The Mets, since 2024, haven't won a game in which they were trailing after eight innings? That's a brutal statistic.

This season, the Mets haven't been able to mount any such comeback, which isn't much of a surprise considering how the team only has 15 wins this season.

They did win in extra-innings this season in Game 2 against the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the Pirates did score runs in the top half of the 10th and 11th innings.

But, when it comes strictly to a nine-inning game, the Mets, according to Nightengale, have not won a single game when trailing by a run after eight innings. Meaning, at the start of the ninth inning, the Mets are down at least a run.

It's a bit of a specific statistic, as the Mets have made some comeback wins over the last year-plus. But, with this strict parameter of trailing after eight innings, the Mets have not won such a game since 2024.

The 2026 season has been a total disaster, and a statistic like this only makes sense. But, when it's also factoring all 162 games of the 2025 MLB season, it's that much more alarming for the Mets.

All it takes for this statistic to be put in the past is one ninth-inning comeback. But, for now, the Mets' lack of ninth-inning clutch is just one of many brutal statistics amid a rough last year or so for the franchise.
