Mets' Freddy Peralta discusses potential long-term extension

The New York Mets will be looking for a lot different this coming season after making a few splash moves this offseason.

After losing Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz in free agency, New York traded away Brandon Nimmo, Jeff McNeil, and Jess Winker, among many others.

After this took place, the president of baseball operations decided to bolster the Mets' starting rotation, trading for former Milwaukee Brewers ace Freddy Peralta.

The 29-year-old will bring in an expiring contract this season that has him getting paid $8 million in 2026, so a brand new contract could be in the works. Let's discuss it.

Freddy Peralta discusses new contract with Mets

Freddy Peralta was able to reunite with the president of baseball operations who traded for him back when he began his Brewers career in 2015, David Stearns.

The two-time All-Star pitcher said he "had a feeling" he would end up with the Mets after emerging in trade rumors.

He will join a rotation that includes Sean Manaea, David Peterson, Nolan McLean, and others. But as of right now, it's a temporary move as the new Mets pitcher will be playing on an expiring contract in 2026.

He spoke with The Athletic's Tim Britton on potentially getting an extension with his new team, saying, "I just got here. I've got to see around and share time with my teammates, think about different ideas, learn about everybody – the coaches and the organization in general. And then we can see."

If Peralta can provide the same momentum to the Mets as he did with the Brewers, New York's front office will have some thinking to do.
